I am an Environmental Scientist who has worked all over the world in geomorphology and environmental quality. I have worked consistently in sedimentology and geochemistry since 1987, studying geomorphic processes and using geochemical techniques to gain insights as to how and when sediments were deposited. I spent ~20 months on high latitude fieldwork, with four trips to Antarctica, three to Iceland and several to Alaska and Canada. Since 1996 I have worked on contaminant transport and mitigation within Antarctica, and since 2002 I have worked on rehabilitation of contaminated sites, particularly base metal mines, within Australia.

Most of my research involves environmental geochemistry, and particularly understanding, using and extending the use of environmental X-rays using techniques such as X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and X-ray diffractometry. The mainstay of my research remains environmental work, with recent projects including assessing tank rainwater quality in towns near Newcastle, acid mine drainage and metal pollution elsewhere in New South Wales, and ongoing research in contaminant stabilisation. This kind of work is highly employable, with some of my students being offered professional employment before completing third year.

My Honours and graduate students go on to work in natural hazards, geomorphology, environmental management and contaminated sites management, for consultancies, research institutions and government both in Australia and overseas. Environmental problems are global problems, and Environmental Scientists are part of a global workforce. It's an exciting career for the right person - contact me if you're interested in finding out more.

Undergraduate Teaching

I teach at second and third year. Unit descriptions, my role in those units, and the links to them on the Web can be found on my undergraduate teaching page. You will need to be a student in the units to access the unit Web sites.

Research

My research interests encompass fluvial processes and environmental geochemistry in polar to temperate environments, sedimentation in arid lands, and natural hazards. My research page has further details.
